What goes into a new paver driveway in Torrance?
Driveway pavers in Torrance, CA are concrete pavers set over a layer of compacted stone built thick enough for car traffic. When that base is right, the driveway stays level, and you can swap out a broken paver instead of breaking out the whole thing.
Most people call us about an old concrete driveway that's cracked, heaved or holding puddles, or a gravel strip they're tired of tracking into the house. The price moves with the size of the driveway, whether old concrete has to come out, how deep a base your soil calls for, whether drain pipe goes in and which pavers you pick. The schedule mostly turns on hauling off the old surface, getting the pavers delivered and clearing any permit steps, plus a dry stretch for the base work. You'll get your own numbers in a written estimate with the scope spelled out.
How we lay driveway pavers, from the base up
We start with the base, because that's what the driveway really rides on. Our crew digs out the old surface and the soft soil under it, then spreads and compacts crushed stone in layers. Industry guidance calls for a deeper base under a driveway than under a walk, and deeper again for some soils and heavier traffic, so I set the depth for your lot instead of copying the last job. Where the ground is clay that drains slowly, we work drain pipe into the plan, which is what trade guidance recommends under paving that cars drive on. Then we screed a bedding layer, lay the pavers, lock the edges so they can't creep and sweep sand into the joints before a final pass with the compactor.
A new driveway tends to show up whatever's next to it. Where the drive cuts into a slope or the yard sits higher than the pavers, we can build a retaining wall along the edge so the soil stays where it belongs. If the brick steps or planter beside it have loose joints and chipped faces, our masonry restoration work brings them back with mortar that suits the old brick, not mortar so hard it cracks the wall it was meant to fix.
Standard pavers
Standard pavers are built to keep rain off the soil underneath and send it across the surface to the street or a drain. They suit most driveways, and they're the plain choice when you'd rather the ground under your cars stayed dry.
Permeable pavers
Permeable pavers have open joints filled with small stone, so rain runs down through the driveway into the soil instead of off it. They suit lots where the ground takes water well, and we'll talk through whether yours does before you choose them.
What Torrance soil and permits mean for driveway pavers
The city's permits and mapping office issues permits for work in the public right-of-way along the street, and its list covers construction, excavation, dumpsters, oversized loads and lane closures. Driveway pavers aren't named on it, so that list doesn't settle whether your job needs a permit, and that office is the place to ask. If yours does, we handle the application with the office that covers your address and tell you what we learn before any work starts.
Expansive clay, the kind that swells when it's wet and shrinks as it dries, sits under most of North Torrance and the Walteria Lake area in southwest Torrance. Enough wetting and drying makes buildings and other improvements sink unevenly, and a driveway is about as improved as a front yard gets. On a lot like that, the deeper base and drain pipe aren't upsells, so when I come out I check how the yard drains and where water sits after the sprinklers run. We're based in Torrance and work in many of the cities around it, and we give the ground the same look on driveway jobs in Redondo Beach and Lomita. If your city isn't on our list, call and ask.
Why Torrance homeowners hire us for driveway pavers
I look at your lot myself
I come out to look at the job myself, so the person sizing up your soil and drainage is the same one who writes your estimate. If you're on the clay that runs under much of North Torrance, I'll tell you while I'm standing on it.
Our own crew lays it
Our own crew does the work, with a lead mason running the site and me stopping by to check on it. The people who heard the plan are the people who build it.
In business since 2013
Before I started this business in 2013, I spent years at a masonry supply yard hearing how jobs went after the trucks left. Most of the bad stories were about what was under the job, which is why the base gets the attention it does.
Licensed and insured on every job
We're licensed and insured, and I'm glad to show you the paperwork when I come out instead of asking you to take my word for it. That matters on a driveway, where heavy equipment works a few feet from your house.
Tell me what your driveway's doing. Send a request or call (424) 318-3093, and I'll set a time to come look.

We reply within one business day to set a time for me to come out. The estimate is free, done at your property and obligation-free. You get it in writing with the scope spelled out, so you know exactly what's under the pavers before you decide.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a paver driveway cost in Torrance?
I can't give a fair number without seeing the lot, because the part that varies most is underground. When you compare bids, ask each contractor how deep they plan the base and whether drain pipe is included, since a cheap bid usually saves its money where you can't see it. You'll get our figure in a written estimate after I come out.
Are permeable pavers a good choice for a driveway in Torrance?
They can be on a lot whose soil takes water, but permeable pavers generally aren't used where groundwater sits within 2 feet of the bottom of the pavement. On the slow-draining clay found across much of North Torrance, I usually steer people toward standard pavers with drain pipe. I'll tell you which way your lot leans when I see it.
How do I clean permeable pavers?
Regular sweeping or a vacuum sweeper keeps them working, and a surface that has clogged up can usually be brought back with vacuum equipment. The point is to keep the stone in the joints open so rain still soaks through, so it's worth doing before the joints fill with dirt and leaves.
How much of my front yard can I pave in Torrance?
The city's final inspection checklist says no more than 50% of the front yard may be paved, and walkways count toward that. The checklist also notes that not every item applies to every project, so I measure the yard during the estimate and we lay the driveway out with that limit in mind.
Who should install a paver driveway in California?
Hire a licensed contractor and ask what their license covers. California lists a C-12 Earthwork and Paving class, which includes placing paving and other surfacing materials. Industry guidance also says paver driveways should be put in by experienced installers with a current ICPI Concrete Paver Installer certificate, so that's a fair question for any bidder.
What causes a paver driveway to sink?
Usually the base, either too thin for the weight of a car or sitting on soil that stays wet, so it settles unevenly and the pavers follow it down. The good news with pavers is that we can lift them, rebuild what's underneath and set most of the same pavers back down.
Other work that often goes with a new driveway
Retaining wall construction
If your driveway runs along a slope or a raised planter, a retaining wall holds the soil back so it doesn't push against the pavers or wash dirt into the base.
Masonry restoration
Brick steps, porch walls or a front planter that look tired next to new pavers can be cleaned, repaired and repointed so the whole front of the house looks finished.
